Illinois Townships: a solution without a problem.

According to the Alton, Ill. Telegraph, Illinois lead the country in hosting an overabundance of local governments. Three out of four people you pass on the street are elected to something, and as tax time approaches, they've all got their hands out.

Of particular interest is townships. Nobody knows what they're for, where they came from or what they do. This week's column about Illinois townships in the Rock Island Argus/Moline Dispatch column does absolutely nothing to shed light on the problem.
